Snow Removal
The Richmond township Road District uses salt, salt brine, liquid calcium chloride, sand, and birds-eye gravel (a small rounded stone approximately 1/8" or smaller in size) in addition to snow plowing to combat the hazards of snow and ice on the roadways. Although salt and salt brine with or with out calcium chloride are the primary products used for most snow events, the road district evaluates each winter event and prepares the product in a fashion that will maximize effectiveness and roadway safety.
Mailboxes
The township road district will repair or replace a mailbox and or mailbox post if it is damaged from direct contact with a township owned and operated plow or plow truck. If the damage was caused by snow or a windrow (the flying snow that comes off a snow plow) the township will not repair or replace the mailbox or mailbox post. Please take this in to consideration when installing and choosing your mailbox. It should be designed to withstand with the force and weight that a wet snow can have when a plow truck passes.
Mailboxes that are not installed to meet the USPS guidelines will not be repaired or replaced. USPS guidelines can be found here https://www.usps.com/manage/mailboxes.htm
Mailboxes must be constructed in a manor that they will fall away (break from the ground) in the event that they are hit. Posts mounted in concrete or constructed to be non destructible may result in the property owner being responsible for damages.
The township recommends replacing wooden mailbox posts every 10 years. Moisture in the ground, the freezing and thawing, and other environmental factors cause a post to become week and tend to be prone to failure where the post meets the ground.
The township will replaces all mailboxes with a USPS standard size box mounted on a 4x4 wooden post.
Damaged mailboxes or mailbox posts must be reported to the road district within 2 business days after the end of the snow event that caused the damage.
You can make a damage report by:
- Calling the office during normal hours.
- Leaving a message after hours.
- Filling out the online message found on the "About" page of our website.
